A commoner is any undergraduate member of the University who has not obtained a college scholarship or exhibition, or been admitted to read for one of the degrees listed under Graduate Students. Senior students wear the commoners' gown, as do students reading for Special Diplomas.

The gown is made of black material but with the style of a turned-over collar. It has no sleeves, but has a streamer on each side with square pleating and hanging to the full length of the gown, which covers the normal lounge coat. A square cap is worn (or for women, a soft cap if preferred).
